Instagram has given users another way to create standout carousel posts by adding new carousel editing tools to its Edits app.
Edits, of course, is primarily focused on video editing, but now, users will also be able to create and refine their carousels using the app’s creative tools. This will provide an expanded capacity to put together eye-catching, thumb-stopping carousel sequences.
As explained by Instagram: “Drop in photos and videos, play with fun layouts, repurpose Edits fonts and text styles, and cutout your own stickers to use across your content. It’s everything you love about the Edits app, on a new canvas for your ideas.”
The update gives Instagram creators a range of tools to build their carousels with, including fonts, overlays, effects and more.
Instagram has been working to give creators more options for carousels, based on engagement with the format.
In 2024, Instagram Chief Adam Mosseri said that carousel posts improve users’ opportunities to get more engagement and subsequent reach because more posts mean more time spent in-stream. Carousels also have higher exposure potential because Instagram will re-show carousels to followers, beginning on the second slide, when they come back to the app.
Last year, as part of its social media engagement research, Buffer reported that carousel posts earn an average of about 12% more engagement per post than single post updates.
In order to lean into this, Instagram added the option to rearrange carousel posts and to add captions to each post within a carousel.
More creative tools will provide additional considerations.
Carousel editing is available on the iOS version of Edits, and is coming to Android soon.
