The Parent Split-Face Trend or Family Resemblance Trend, also known as the Mom Effect Trend or Dad Effect Trend, is a viral social media trend in which users take two portraits, one of themselves and the other of their mom or dad, and merge half of their face with a parent’s to show family resemblance. The comparison trend emerged in August 2026 and spread on TikTok and other social media platforms over the following weeks, with many users utilizing AI tools to generate the black-and-white photos.
As the trend spread, some also created additional comparisons using the split-face portrait template to see how they looked compared to siblings and other family members, as well as couples comparing each other’s faces. Many of the posts within the trend notably use captions like “you look like your mom” or “you look just like your dad” alongside the images. Some also use color photos instead of black-and-white pictures.
Origin
The exact first post that kicked off the larger black-and-white photo comparison trend on TikTok is unknown, but similar examples began appearing online in early-to-mid-August 2026.
For instance, on August 7th, 2026, Instagram user samanthaslider03152023 shared a slideshow comprised of two full-color photos comparing her face to her mother and father, noting that she used Meta’s artificial intelligence tool to create the split-face images. The post, however, did not go viral, only accumulating 10 likes and 14 comments in a month.
On August 19th, 2026, one of the earliest examples of the black-and-white split-face trend then appeared on TikTok when the user ngomai729 posted a tutorial in Russian showing people how to create their own using a CapCut template. The tutorial video garnered over 1,070 likes and 80 comments in a month.

Leading into September 2026, the Family Resemblance Trend spread more widely on TikTok as users created and shared their own examples of their portraits compared to their parents and siblings, as well as couples using the format.
On September 8th, 2026, TikToker clzl3vnad2 posted another tutorial video on how to recreate the trend using CapCut, garnering over 97,900 likes and 580 comments in 10 days.

On September 10th, TikTok user templateccja shared a version with their father and mother, referencing it as the “look alike trend,” receiving over 10,700 likes and 60 comments in a week.

On September 12th, 2026, TikToker us3rqxr uploaded a photo slideshow using the trend to show how much they look like their father, garnering over 35,500 likes and 410 comments in five days.
On September 13th, TikTok user idatravels05 shared another example of the trend with the caption, “You look like your mom,” receiving over 6,700 likes and 140 comments in four days.
