The meme originates from Dexter: New Blood season one, episode six, titled “Too Many Tuna Sandwiches.” The shocked reaction image first became the subject of memes in March 2025, and the combined reactions became the subject of memes later that year. As an image macro and GIF caption format, the memes are used alongside captions about enjoying something that suddenly turns out to be shocking in nature.

On December 12th, 2021, Dexter: New Blood, season one, episode six, “Too Many Tuna Sandwiches,” aired on TV. In one scene, the character Harrison breaks another kid’s arm during a school wrestling match. Kurt Caldwell, played by Clancy Brown, is first laughing at the match, then expresses shock when the student’s arm is broken.
The image of Caldwell expressing shock was first used as a meme in two posts made on the /r/okbuddymotherfucker subreddit on March 3rd and March 11th, 2025, by now-deleted users, writing, “Why is he called sexter when the show clearly is called dexter are the writers stupid?” and “Since we know doakes was Jewish I wonder what his go to order was at the local deli?”
On April 10th, 2025, TikToker @mbvlayne posted a video edit that combines the two reactions and loops them, garnering over a million views in a year.

On July 27th, 2025, Tenor user Bigmack0000 posted a GIF of the reaction edit by TikTok user @mbvlayne, allowing further usage and spread of the meme.
On September 3rd, Redditor No_Temperature3844 posted the reaction to the /r/marvelmemes subreddit, writing, “Everyone watching spiderman in the new marvel zombies trailer,” garnering over 2,900 upvotes in a year.
On April 21st, 2026, X user @CS11__ posted the GIF, writing, “NO FUCKING WAY THIS CLANCY BROWN GIF IS FROM DEXTER NEW BLOOD 😭😭,” gaining over 22,000 likes in five months.
On August 23rd, X user @banannerbread posted the GIF under the caption, “Posted Spider-Man yaoi on Instagram and my highly respected colleagues are liking it,” gaining over 13,000 likes in a month.
